                          QUALITATIVE METHODS OF RESEARCH:
                          "Immigration and Juvenile Crime:
Perspectives for Prevention from Parents and At-Risk Youth"
                                 21 November 2007
                                10:00 am to 12 nn
                      Natividad Galang Fajardo Conference Room
                         Ground Floor, Dela Costa Building
                             Ateneo de Manila University

A major challenge, faced by scholars and academics in the design of
research projects, is how to make their research relevant to community
needs so that the findings of the project will have a very direct impact
on current practice and policy. This presentation looks at a study on
Asian American gangs led by the author and completed in 2001, and
discusses how the study was designed so that the principal output of the
study would be a set of recommendations---for schools and community-based
organizations working with at-risk youth---that could be used towards
violence prevention in the programs of these organizations. In addition,
this presentation will also discuss some of the key findings of the study
which should be of interest to immigrant families since the study suggests
that a major contributing factor to juvenile crime among immigrant
communities derives from the stresses and strains of recent immigration
   and acculturation.

The seminar will use the presentation abstract above as the core of the
lecture but will add a fuller discussion of methodology, especially
interviewing and focus groups. Alongside qualitative methods, the
illustrative study also makes use of quantitative data. Handouts will be
provided to the participants upon request. Call up the English Department
if you wish to attend the seminar: tel. no. 426 6120.
