Abstract:

The Internet (a public and often insecure channel) is now the most
commonly used medium for transmitting personal or business-related
information. To protect the transfer of sensitive information from
eavesdroppers on the Internet, messages should be transmitted in encrypted
form, thus assuring the sender of a message that it will only be read by
the intended receiver (privacy). Also, cryptography techniques prevent the
unauthorized injection of messages into the Internet, assuring the
receiver of a message of the legitimacy of its sender (authentication).

In this talk, I will describe the two essentially different types
of cryptographic systems (Secret-key and Public-key) and how to utilize
them to obtain private and authenticate communication in a public and
insecure channel.
