The Ateneo community is wamly invited to the launching of
Engaging Society: A Sociologist in a War Zone

             Father John J. Carroll, S.J.
Tuesday, January 16, 2007, 4.30 pm
  Social Development Complex Conference Hall
  Ateneo de Manila University
  Loyola Heights, Quezon City.
The volume gathers together Father Carroll's academic articles and
commentaries that tackle issues like the relevance of Church teachings
in society today, political and structural change, problems affecting
the family, among others. His multifaceted career for the last fifty years
or so has combined scholarly research and teaching with advocacy work
in the public sphere, particularly of issues affecting the urban poor.
The collection gives us a glimpse of the different aspects of his work and life
as a Jesuit educator and advocate of social change, bringing together
pieces that Prof. Randy David has referred to as quietly passionate essays
that are "intensely stimulating and relevant to the current national situation."

Engaging Society, with a foreword by Dr. Mary Racelis, is
published by the Ateneo de Manila University Press, and will
soon be available at Solidaridad (523-0870), Popular Bookstore
(372-2162), branches of Fully Booked (756-5001), the Loyola Schools
bookstore, and the Ateneo Press (426-5984; unipress at admu.edu.ph).

Look at / what passes for the new. / You will not find it there but in /
despised poems. / It is difficult / to get the news from poems /
yet men die miserably every day / for lack / of what is found there.
