POWER: Implementation of energy conservation measures started a year ago is more urgently needed now. All are asked to actively participate in energy conservation.
COMMUNICATION: The lightning thunderstorm last Saturday, 28 July damaged a PABX card and disabled some local lines. By Monday, 30 July the card was replaced and communication restored to all lines. Thunderstorms can damage the PABX, Internet, laboratory equipment and instruments.
WATER: Given the water crisis, the community is asked to actively conserve water. The University Physical Plant for its part is actively checking water systems for leaks. When the HS cafeteria was expanded some years back, the waterline was not relocated to the side of the cafeteria for easy repair and maintenance. The temporary repair was done last 28 and 29 July.
We can all do our share to conserve water by doing the basics:
1.. Always make sure that all taps/faucets are tightly closed. According to MWSS: "A tap left running wastes 200 liters of water every 5 minutes".
2.. Report immediately leaks and busted pipes on campus to: local 4104, 4105 or 4111.
All cisterns and overhead tanks have been cleaned for the 2nd quarter. Only one cistern failed to meet the standard and is under study now. The Biology Department of the Loyola Schools is involved in the study of the problematic cistern to determine the cause of the problem.
TRAFFIC: An SUV rammed a slow-moving or stalled truck towing heavy equipment on the northbound lane of the Katipunan-Aurora flyover past midnight last Friday, 3 August. The SUV was wrecked but the driver survived. The incident was reported on TV.
The community is cautioned to be wary of speeding vehicles, drivers disregarding traffic rules, slow-moving heavy equipment, stalled vehicles without early warning devices along Katipunan late at night and early morning.
The concrete post on the northbound service road before Ateneo's Gate 1 that was rammed by a car early morning last Saturday, 28 July has been replaced.
SECURITY: A High School student was attacked and bitten by one of two German Shepherds dogs tied to a tree across the Church of the Gesu last Tuesday, 31 July. The High School boy was bitten in the arm is now under observation. It is imperative that the German shepherd involved must be placed under observation for two weeks.
The boy's parents are very worried and would like to determine if the dog had anti-rabies shots that the owner can prove. They would also like to meet the Loyola Schools students who came to their assistance and even hailed a taxi to take the boy to Medical City for treatment.
The community's assistance is requested in identifying the owner of the German shepherd and in locating the good Samaritans who helped their son. Please call local 4111 for any information that can be provided.
Abandoned Car: Gate 2 guards noticed a car with a no. 8 license plate abandoned outside Gate 2 around 5:00 a.m. last Saturday, 4 August. Gate 2 is closed at 12:00 midnight & opened at 5:00 a.m. Security notified Precinct 9 immediately in case the vehicle was carnapped or involved in a robbery or other crimes. The police came and towed the car away before 7:00 a.m.
The owner of the vehicle has not been identified and there is no information why the vehicle was abandoned in front of Gate 2.
Graffiti vandals have been active again and have spray painted the Vacuum Switch housing near the creek, the Gate 3.5 footbridge, the bollards between Gate 1 and Gate 2, and the waiting shed between Gate 2 and Gate 2.5. Remedial measures will be taken to remove the graffiti. Measures have also been instituted to apprehend the vandal/s. Once apprehended, the vandal/s will be required to pay for the cost of removal of the graffiti.
Sword of St. Ignatius: The metal replica sword of St. Ignatius at the statue in front of Manila Observatory was replaced with a wooden replica early morning of Wednesday, 1 August by University Physical Plant personnel. The metal replica is now on display at the Rizal Library. The wooden replica will be replaced quietly every time the paint shows signs of deterioration due to the weather. Mr. Fidel R. Manaog, head of Carpentry Section is the custodian of St. Ignatius' replica swords.
