Traditionally, the cultural basis of English Language Teaching (ELT) has
been the English-speaking world, notably Britain and the USA. However,
considering English as an International Language (EIL) requires us to make use
of the culture of non-English speaking countries, as well as the student's own
culture. Looking at culture in ELT is important in terms of the students'
personal development (developing greater understanding and tolerance of
different cultures), language use (helping people to understand the
assumptions behind language and use language more appropriately for different
contexts), as well as the student's own world (providing opportunities to
compare and contrast with their own culture).

About the Speaker:
Tom Hutchinson has taught English in the UK, Germany, and Croatia, and he
has given teacher training courses in many other countries around the world.
For a number of years he lectured at the Institute for English Language
Education at Lancaster University, UK. He has published New Hotline, Project,
Project English, Lifelines, Lifetime Video, American Hotline, An Introduction
to Project Work, Big City and the award-winning Project Video with the Oxford
University Press. Apart from writing textbooks, his interests include the
management of change, teacher development, and the teaching of grammar.
