Abstract:
As an ontological ambiguity, suicide eludes discourse. While presuming
that the most ethical treatment of suicide may be a vigilance to its
circumstantial possibility in life, the present essay treats suicide first
as a word that flees its temporally distant referent, then as a literary
trope in poems. Understood as a trope, suicide opens to creative
configuration and reconfiguration; to write about it is to invent a
language that could address its impossibility. Donald Justice's "For the
Suicides of 1962" and Frank Bidart's "The Sacrifice" are studied as
variations of a similar address---forms of resistance against the
reductive judgment of the life and death of an other.
