2ND QUARTER REPORT

                                                                                                      Tuesday, 12 September 2006

POWER: Upgrading of power distribution system in Loyola Heights and in the Ateneo Professional Schools in Makati is ongoing to keep up with new facilities constructed and modification of existing facilities. Improvements in the power distribution infrastructure reduces waste in use of power.

Given the increasing cost of power, all units are encouraged to intensify their energy conservation measures.

COMMUNICATION: The Campus Network Group (CNG) is also upgrading the Internet core network equipment and servers. When completed this semester, services would improve and the problem of spam mail would be substantially reduced in the 2nd semester.

WATER: Cleaning of contaminated cisterns and overhead tanks has been completed. Results of the tests released Monday, 11 September by the Microbiology Laboratory of the Department of Biology are shown below:

            Common cistern Potable

            SEC Cistern Potable

            PLDT-CTC overhead tank Potable

            JG-SOM overhead tank Potable

The cisterns and overhead tanks below have been cleaned. Test results will be released next week:

            HS MST overhead tank

PEDESTRIAN FOOTBRIDGE UPDATE: The southbound trusses of the footbridge were installed last week. The trusses for the northbound lane is scheduled to be installed this week. Despite some delay, it is still reasonable to expect that the footbridge will be completed this month.

Concerns over the proximity of the high voltage 34.5 KV cables to the footbridge have been raised with Meralco. This is to get assurance that there will be no danger to pedestrians using the footbridge. Note the orange insulator in the pictures indicated by the yellow arrow. In the sketch below, the distance between the lowest cable and the slab of the footbridge is 3.43 meters or 11.25 feet.

The new footbridge is higher than the one near Gate 2. The new footbridge is 5.08m or 16.67' at the center. The footbridge near Gate 2 is 4.938m or 16.21'.

Still to be relocated are the telephone wires going through the footbridge. This will be done without disruption of telephone services.

TRAFFIC: To minimize heavy traffic on 16 and 17 September due to the Ateneo College Entrance Tests, Ateneo requested MMDA to field more personnel to manage traffic.

PARKING: The path walk connecting the diversion road parking towards JGSOM building shown below is almost complete. It will be lighted and ready for use late this week.

SECURITY: Many personal items lost on campus have been found and returned to the owners. Joining the ranks of honest tricycle drivers, security guards, maintenance personnel is an employee of the JSA grounds maintenance contractor, Romeo L. Mondejar who found and returned a Motorola cell phone, a wallet containing P600.00 and ATM card at the corner of University Road and Fr. Arrupe Road. These items were turned over to the security office and returned to a coed. Mr. Mondejar is not the first JSA personnel to return recovered items on campus.

Wild Life Sanctuary: Contrary to rumors circulated in the Internet two weeks ago, the Loyola Heights campus is not a killing ground for animals. A constrictor snake, locally known as "sawa", was caught at the Loyola Schools Biology Greenhouse after it ate a rabbit in the Greenhouse. University Physical Plant personnel caught the snake and turned it over to the Greenhouse for safekeeping.
