    Presenter: Fernando (Elmo) Gonzaga IV
Topic: "Ethics in Extremity: Subjectivity and Sovereign Power"
    4:30 -- 6:00 PM, SOH Faculty Lounge
Ground Floor, De la Costa Hall

Another way of approaching the question of ethics in cultural texts is by
studying the representation of extremity, a situation created by
sovereign power where individuals deprived of the necessities of life
must sacrifice moral and societal norms in order to survive. Such
representations reveal the limits and thresholds to the enactment of
ethics and the articulation of subjectivity. One form of ethics that can
be enacted in the extreme situation is Foucault's aesthetics of
existence, which treats the self as a form to be shaped or styled, such
as when individuals in extremity resist the logic of their situation by
striving to maintain their dignity. However, the limit to this ethics
seems to be the Muselmann, the individual who has lost the will to live,
since the loss of will may not be a conscious choice but an inevitable
outcome of the extreme situation.
