You are warmly invited to the launching of Dr. Fernando Zialcita's award-winning book, Authentic Though Not Exotic: Essays on Filipino Identity, on Friday, November 17, 2.30 pm, at the Museum of the Filipino People, 4F of the National Museum.
Dr. Florina H. Capistrano-Baker, director of the Ayala Museum, will deliver a commentary on the book. Author Dr. Zialcita, Professor at the Department of Sociology and Anthropology of the Ateneo de Manila University, will also speak about the book and sign copies afterwards.
The launch, a special added feature of the Seminar on Historical Relations between the Philippines and Mexico, which starts on November 16, is being presented in cooperation with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, and the National Museum.
Authentic Though Not Exotic, winner of the 2005 National Book Award for Social Science, is a collection of essays that offers another way of looking at the encounter between the Western and the indigenous. It suggests that through a dialectical process, this encounter has generated a broader sense of community that has transcended the kin. Local genius transformed external influences as well as being transformed itself, which has resulted in a new culture.
