SITUATION REPORT

Tuesday, 18 July 2006

POWER: The Balara and Katipunan grid power outage last Thursday afternoon, 13 July between 3:45 to 5:05 p.m. was due to the flapping billboard canvas in front of Gate 1 that hit the high-tension cables along Katipunan because of strong winds. Meralco personnel had to secure the canvas to prevent it from hitting the cables further.

Back-up power generators were activated during the outage. The automatic transfer switch of the De la Costa Hall & Social Science building generator malfunctioned and back-up power had to be manually switched on. In the case of the generator for the Department of Communication and College Covered Courts, the generator was overloaded and conked out. Window type air conditioning units were not turned off during the outage and the combined load was beyond the generator's capacity. The generator was restarted after the air conditioning units were turned off.

Typhoon "Florita": A section of the rip-rap on the bank of the creek separating Ateneo and Miriam College collapsed. Fortunately, this did not block the flow of water. Repairs will be done as soon as weather permits.

Middle: The same section seen from the East side of the creek.

Right: Space between Ateneo and Miriam College. The corrugated fence painted green is on the side of Miriam College.

Because of strong winds and heavy rain, five trees were damaged by the typhoon. The hardest hit was the tree near the old Prep area of the Grade School shown in the left picture below.

PEDESTRIAN FOOTBRIDGE: The University Physical Plant was informed by MMDA personnel late last Friday afternoon, 14 July that the contractor was starting the construction of the footing and column pedestal of the pedestrian footbridge at the center island of Katipunan. This is a critical part of the construction as it could adversely affect traffic on Katipunan.

The contractor started work at 9:00 p.m. and completed excavation by 4:00 a.m. the following day. All of Saturday, Quezon City traffic enforcers managed traffic in the area.

The pictures above were taken this morning, 18 July after the contractor concreted the gutters last night. Left pictures shows the southbound lane & right pictures shows the northbound lane.

The contractor completed the critical center island work as scheduled over the weekend. The dreaded traffic congestion in the area was thus avoided.

On campus, the foundation and column pedestals have been concreted but the rate of progress of work is not as impressive.

COMPOST PIT: The mound of twigs, branches and leaves east of where the footbridge is being constructed is the campus compost pit. This was constructed only over a year ago but it is already overflowing. This will be backfilled and leveled. A new compost pit will be excavated near the area.
