ASIA (Asian Studies in Asia) Fellows Award from the Asian Scholarship Foundation

    The Asian Scholarship Foundation (ASF) aims to increase overall awareness of the intellectual resources in the countries of South Asia, Southeast Asia, and the People's Republic of China. ASF seeks to establish a multi-national network of Asian specialists in Asia who will foster the development of Asian studies within existing area studies communities.

    Bangkok-based ASF is an Asian-led non-profit organization funded by a grant from the Ford Foundation. It administers the ASIA Fellows Awards as well as other grants with assistance from its partner institutions in Beijing, Jakarta, Hanoi, Manila, and New Delhi.

ASIA Fellows Awards

    ASIA (Asian Studies in Asia) Fellows Awards support young scholars and mid-career professionals to carry out a research project for a period of six to nine months in any field of Asian Studies -- Arts, Culture, Humanities and Social Sciences. Aside from engaging in field-based research, fellows may also have the opportunities to present guest lectures or to conduct seminars and workshops at the invitation of host institutions.

    Applicants must be a citizen of and resident in any of the following participating countries: Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brunei, Cambodia, the People's Republic of China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, the Republic of Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, the Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Eligibility Requirements

1) Master's or doctorate degree, or equivalent professional training and experience
2) Proficiency in English or in the language of the country where he/she intends to carry out the project
3) 45 years old or younger when they apply
4) A minimum of three years of university teaching experience for scholars
5) Five years work experience for professionals in the proposed Asian Studies area

Award Provisions

1) International travel allowance
2) Monthly living allowance
3) Local travel allowance
4) Research allowance
5) Language study allowance
6) Limited accident and health insurance
7) Excess baggage and shipping allowance
