The Ateneo Art Gallery
warmly invites the public to view
LUZ IN ATENEO
Inner Gallery, Ateneo Art Gallery
Exhibition runs through 21 January 2007
"Luz in Ateneo" is part of "In Light of Luz," a joint project between the
NCCA, CCP, National Museum, Met Museum, Design Center of the Philippines,
Ayala Museum and the Ateneo Art Gallery to give tribute to Arturo Luz,
National Artist, in celebration of his 80th birthday.
The exhibition showcases the early works of Arturo Luz collected by his
friend and colleague Fernando Zobel, all of which formed part of the
Zobel bequest which established the Ateneo Art Gallery in 1961. They are
presented in the university art museum's Inner Gallery, which is reserved
for works from the Zobel donation.
"Luz in Ateneo" features 9 paintings, 6 drawings, and one sculpture. It
was opened on the evening of 21 November 2006 by Fr. Rene Javellana, SJ,
Director of the Fine Arts Program and Acting Curator of the Gallery, with
luminaries from the local arts and culture scene in attendance.
The timing of the exhibition is especially significant, given that it
coincides with the exhibition of this year's Ateneo Art Award and
Sydney Studio Residency Grant recipient Poklong Anading at The Cross Art
Projects in Sydney. It will be recalled that Mr. Luz's donation of art
gave a tremendous boost to the Gallery's efforts to fundraise for this
project, enabling this promising visual artist to develop his creative
mettle, and enhance the appreciation and understanding of modern and
contemporary Philippine art overseas.
A grateful University, Gallery and community welcomes "Luz in Ateneo!"
