          CHRISTIAN WITHOUT BORDERS . . .
            IMPOSSIBLE? IMPERATIVE?

FR. JOSE MARIO C. FRANCISCO, S.J.
            PRESIDENT, LOYOLA SCHOOLOF THEOLOGY

This talk on Christian identity draws from cultural studies on identity
and theological discussions on the relation between Christianity and its
cultural context. It rejects extreme essentialist and constructivist views of
Christian identity, and proposes that the formation of Christian identity is
better described within a “theology of the cultural context from below” which
recognizes God’s ongoing work within and through the historical shapes of
Christianity as it is translated into diverse times and places. Christian
identity is therefore dynamic, internarrative, relational and catholic.
Boundaries where ‘the Christian’ encounters and crosses other personal and
social identifications are thus privileged places for its articulation.
