The Spanish conquest of the Philippines is a neglected event, with most
interpretations being dated, cursory, or colored by ideological biases.
This lecture seeks to make up for this gap by showing the interactions of
the Spanish and Filipino paradigms of warfare -- what John Lynn called a
people's discourse on warfare. This discourse is a product of a people's
history, geography and culture, and it affects such factors as how and
why a people wage war. It is through this examination of the Spanish and
Filipino discourses on war that the events of the Spanish conquest may be
put into their proper context, and perhaps this may clarify the actions
and motivations of the people involved.
