PEDESTRIAN FOOTBRIDGE BULLETIN
Saturday, 12 August 2006

The pedestrian footbridge under construction near Gate 3.5 was hit by a speeding trailer truck carrying a backhoe at 10:10 last Thursday night, 10 August. The impact bent the trusses and detached a 2.5-meter intermediate steel beam that fell on Katipunan. Fortunately no vehicle was hit. The trailer truck sped away to avoid apprehension.

At 9:51 of Friday morning, 11 August a speeding container truck hit and severely damaged the pedestrian footbridge. Pictures of the incidents are shown below:

The sketch of the pedestrian footbridge near Gate 2.5 above shows the vertical clearance in meters and feet. Note that the center clearance is 4.938 meters or 16.21 feet. The center clearance of the footbridge at Gate 3.5 was measured at 4.27 meters or 14.01 feet. The container carried by the truck that hit the footbridge was measured at 4.30 meters or 14.11 feet. The minimum standard clearance is 4.27 meters or 14.01 feet.

The bad news is that the footbridge will not be ready for use on Saturday, 19 August 2006. The contractor promised to inform Ateneo when it will be in place.

The community should be thankful that the deficiencies of the footbridge were found now and not later, which could cause injuries. Traffic on campus and Katipunan should be back to normal.
