Abstract:

Dr. Johnson will talk about the reasons why students of capital punishment
policy in the 21st century need to study Asia. He will highlight the
perspective of law and society toward Asia. These theoretical concerns will
be linked to the fact that in recent years, Asia has been the site of at
least 85 percent and as many as 95 percent of the world's executions. Dr.
Johnson will therefore stress the importance of studying capital punishment
in Asia.

Dr. David T. Johnson is currently Associate Professor of Sociology and
Adjunct Professor of Law at the University of Hawaii. He was Summa Cum
Laude at Bethel College, St. Paul Minnesota, in 1983. He obtained his M.A.
in Sociology at the University of Chicago and his Ph.D. in Jurisprudence
and Social Policy at the University of California at Berkeley, Boalt Hall
School of Law.
