The English-Speaking Union is an international educational charity founded
in 1918 to promote "international understanding and friendship through the
use of the English language." It has almost 40 branches in the UK and
over 50 international branches in countries in every part of the world.
One of the well known ESU events is the International Public Speaking
Contest held in May every year in London. It was at this event where
Particia Evangelista was declared Champion in 2004. Our own Mahar
Mangahas and Camille Ng were Philippine delegates to this contest in 2002
and 2003, respectively.

The visit of Lord Watson to Manila is occasioned by the launch of the ESU
Philippines chapter on 21 November. In view of this event, some 60
British residents form part of the 'entourage' at both the symposium and
the launch. The symposium will also be attended by guests from other
universities as well as from the business/industry sector.
