The Ateneo Institute of Literary Arts and Practices and the Kagawaran ng
Filipino invite the LS Community to the first of the AILAP Writers on
Campus Series which will begin with Dr. Ruth Elynia Mabanglo's talk on
her poetry and on writing Filipino poetry on Wednesday, 27 JULY 2005,
1:30 to 3:00 p.m. at Social Science Conference Rooms 1 and 2.
Dr. Mabanglo has the distinction of being the first woman poet to belong
to the Hall of Fame (1995) of the Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for
Literature, and the first woman poet in Filipino to publish a poetry
collection. She was chosen Poet of the Year (1992) in the Talaang Ginto
of the Komisyon ng Wikang Filipino. Likewise, she was a fellow at the
University of the Philippines Creative Writing Center (1988), University
of Iowa International Writing Program (1987), Adelaide Arts Festival
Writers' Week (1990), and the Poetry Festival in Malaysia. Her Two
poetry anthologies, Mga Liham ni Pinay (1990) and Mesa para sa Isa (2002)
were recipients of the National Book Award. She has read her poetry in
various U.S. cities as well as in other countries.
Dr. Mabanglo teaches Filipino literature at the University of Hawaii at
Manoa where she is Professor and Coordinator of the Filipino and
Philippine Literature Program of the Department of Hawaiian and
Indo-Pacific Languages and Literatures.
