In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the Augustinian Recollect missionaries in Bolinao went about their work encouraging the animist inhabitants of the region to discard their traditional belief system and embrace Hispanic Catholicism. While religious orders in other parts of the archipelago had ample success in this regard, in Bolinao a "cell" of resistance led by women baylan perpetuated the religious tradition of the ancestors. In the 1670s the diocesan inquisitor, Filipe Pardo, set in process an "inquisition" designed to destroy the power and authority enjoyed by "those cursed priestesses." Using the manuscript that details the activities of the inquisitors, this talk explores the process of upward and downward social mobility that occurred in Bolinao, and analyzes the strategies the women baylan used to preserve the spiritual tradition of their ancestors.
