The study explores the intersection of microfinance and social capital through the group methodology in two women's microfinance centers in Eastern Samar. Center participation allows women members to engage service providers and fellow members in obtaining financial services based on the condition of mutual guarantee and contingent renewal. The study views microfinance centers at two levels. At the micro level, social interactions in these centers show how group norms evolve according to the formal rules of the program. At the macro level, the centers form part of women's networks of mutual support and reciprocity, or social capital, which is embedded in a broader social context. Women's narratives provide a glimpse of how women use savings, social insurance, and credit transactions as strategies to consciously navigate and construct a life-world.

Mr. Jose L. Estuar is a Research Associate of the IPC under its Merit Research Awards (MRA) Program, and is currently a graduate student of the Ateneo's Department of Sociology and Anthropology. His views on microfinance have been influenced by sociologists and anthropologists advocating a focus on people and their social worlds, and by the stories of the people themselves.
