Evangelical churches reject demands for Arroyo to resign  *(**Inquirer

"THE PHILIPPINE Council of Evangelical Churches (PCEC) has rejected 
calls for President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to resign, saying she should 
be given her day in court.  PCEC president Efraim Tendero said that the 
President had a right to due process and should be presumed innocent 
until proven guilty.  The PCEC's announcement followed the decision of 
the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines not to ask the 
President to resign."

Police on full alert ahead of anti-Arroyo rallies   *(**INQ7.net)*

"POLICE forces nationwide were placed on the highest full alert on 
Tuesday, a day before anti-Arroyo rallies are scheduled to hit the 
streets to demand President Gloria Macaagal-Arryo's resignation.  
Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Director General Arturo Lomibao, 
quoting intelligence reports, said the Abu Sayyaf and the communist New 
People's Army (NPA) could infiltrate the protesters' ranks.  "We are on 
full alert because of reports that several extremist groups might take 
advantage of the protest rallies," Lomibao told a news conference in 
Camp Crame."

"The decision of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines not 
to endorse the resignation of President Arroyo will stop the flow of 
funds for anti-GMA rallies, Sen. Miriam Defensor Santiago predicted Monday."

"Santiago's prediction came after the anti-Arroyo forces vowed to hold 
their biggest rally in Makati on Wednesday."

"The soft CBCP stand means we have to work harder, mobilize more people 
and food so Susan Roces will come to our rally," said Linggoy Alcuaz, 
secretary-general of the National Coalition of Concerned Volunteers."

"Mayor JV Ejercito of San Juan said the rally on Paseo de Roxas and 
Ayala Avenue could draw at least 50,000."

"The Supreme Court Tuesday ordered Vice-President Noli de Castro and 
former senator Loren Legarda to submit proposals on the conduct of the 
recount of the vice-presidential race."  

"The court also ordered Legarda to submit the names of witnesses that 
could support her claims that she was cheated in the vice-presidential 
race last year.    "

"De Castro was proclaimed winner of the vice-presidential race with an 
edge of about 880,000 votes over Legarda.""

"The political crisis took its toll on the economy Monday, with two 
international rating agencies revising their outlook on the country to 
negative from stable.Stocks closed 1.25 percent lower and the peso 
weakened to 56.220 against the dollar at the close of trading just above 
its all-time low of 56.45."

"International rating agencies Standard & Poor's and Fitch Ratings said 
separately that their outlook downgrade of the Philippines reflected 
prevailing political uncertainty.  Both Fitch and S&P reportedly cited 
the suspension of the E-VAT Law implementation.

"Malacañan on Tuesday named Land Bank of the Philippines president and 
chief executive officer Gary B. Teves as the new secretary of the 
Department of Finance."

Opposition joins Lozano in bid to unseat Arroyo *(abs-cbnnews.com)*

"Opposition lawmakers on Tuesday said they will revise an existing 
impeachment complaint filed by lawyer Oliver Lozano instead of filing a 
separate impeachment charge at the House of Representatives.   San Juan 
Rep. Ronaldo Zamora said opposition congressmen are also eyeing taking 
control of the impeachment complaint after it was endorsed by Alagad 
party-list Rep. Rodante Marcoleta."

"Lozano, meanwhile, said he will allow the opposition to supplement the 
impeachment complaint but denied that it was insufficient to impeach the 
President."

"The Chief Executive has issued an apology for "lapse in judgment" when 
she made calls to an election official during the 2004 elections, a move 
seen by her detractors as an admission that the voice in the audio 
recordings belonged to her."

The exchange rate closed today at P56.11 per dollar.  High at P56.20, 
Low at P56.08 and Average P56.124.
