Why people give gifts has always been of interest to anthropologists. In this era of transnational capital, gift processes occur in syncopated time and in disconnected locales. This research seeks to understand the forces that motivate distant strangers in the Philippines and throughout the world to form a shared community of gifts. It examines how donors, recipients, and aid workers engage in philanthropic or charitable giving through the cultural resignification of love. At a broader level, the study examines how philanthropic aid articulates with anonymous transactions of capital, commodities, and services in a globalized world. By reexamining complex forms of transaction and processes of movement through philanthropy and charity, it hopes to shed new light on the nation-state and its relationship with the global flows of capital.

Mr. Robert Ingenito is a graduate student in Sociocultural Anthropology at the University of Washington in Seattle. He received his BA in Anthropology and Music from Skidmore College in 2001, after which, through the US Fulbright Student Scholarship program, he conducted research on Aeta children who had been uprooted by the 1991 eruption of Mount Pinatubo. Since July 2005, he has been conducting fieldwork in Metro Manila for his MA thesis, which he will discuss in this talk.
