Born and raised in Damascus, Syria, Dr. Arafat moved to the United States in 1989 and, since then, has been active in inter-faith work, promoting better understanding between Muslims and other Faith Traditions. Dr. Arafat attended Damascus University, graduating with a degree in Islamic Studies and Arabic Language in 1987, and a degree in Islamic Law in 1988. He obtained his PhD in Philosophy and Theology from Trinity College and University in 1999. He has taught courses at the University of Maryland, Johns Hopkins University, Goucher College in Washington, DC, and the College of Notre Dame of Maryland. He currently teaches Islamic Studies and Theology at the Ecumenical Institute of Theology at St. Mary's Seminary and University. He is also the Muslim Chaplain of the Baltimore City Police Department.
