FILIPINO YOUTH IN SPECIAL HIGH SCHOOLS
Dr. Virginia A. Miralao

Institute of Philippine Culture, Ateneo de Manila University
Social Development Complex, Loyola Heights, Quezon City
Initiated by the UNESCO National Commission of the Philippines' Social and Human Sciences Committee, this study of Filipino youth was intended to obtain information on various aspects of youth life and the transitions that today's youth negotiate toward adulthood. Dr. Miralao led the PSSC study in March 2003 in three schools, namely, the Philippine Science High School in Quezon City; the OB Montessori High School in Greenhills, San Juan; and the Philippine High School for the Arts in Mt. Makiling, Los Baños, Laguna. A total of eighty-four senior high school students participated.
The study utilized a survey questionnaire and a series of self-rated personality scales. The survey questionnaire generated information on several aspects of the respondents' lives, including their family background; relationships with parents and siblings; association and activities with peers; life and work at school; religious/spiritual beliefs and practices; exposure to different media forms; heroes and role models; aspirations and future life goals; and notions of civic responsibility. The personality scales elicited information on the students' sense of self, i.e., their self-esteem, their value priorities, and what they think they can and cannot do.
Dr. Miralao is the Executive Director of the Philippine Social Science Council. She obtained her PhD in Sociology from Cornell University. Affiliated with the IPC for many years, Dr. Miralao served as the Institute's Chief of Operations from 1979 to 1983. She is currently a member of the IPC Board.
