Castilian and the Origins of Nationalism in the Spanish Philippines
Dr. Vicente L. Rafael

This paper traces the ilustrado fascination for Castilian and its promise
as a lingua franca during the formative stages of nationalist
consciousness. It asks what becomes of this fascination and this promise
once it is betrayed in the pages of La Solidaridad and in the streets of
Paris and Madrid.
Dr. Rafael is Professor of History at the University of Washington in
Seattle. He is the author of Contracting Colonialism: Translation and
Christian Conversion in Tagalog Society under Early Spanish Rule
(Cornell and Ateneo, 1988), and White Love and Other Events in
Filipino History (Duke and Ateneo, 2000); and editor of Discrepant
Histories: Translocal Essays on Filipino Cultures (Anvil, 1995). He
graduated from the Ateneo de Manila University in 1977.
