Today, June 21, is
the feastday of St. Aloysius Gonzaga
after whom one of our buildings
in the college is named.

St. Aloysius is the patron saint
of the youth.

Aloysius Gonzaga,
you who were detached from all worldly goods
and who followed the Lord with single-hearted devotion,
pray for us.

Aloysius Gonzaga (1568 - 1591)

Aloysius Gonzaga was born into a noble family in 1568. He was supposed
to succeed his father, the Marquis of Castiglione. In preparation for
his inherited position, he went on training expeditions with his father
where he learned how to use arms. Sickness interfered with this
training, and consequently he began to focus on the interior life. When
he was sent to the Medici Court in Florence, it led him to reject the
courtly manners he was learning.

Eventually, when he was in Spain with his family, he decided to enter the
Society of Jesus. He needed his father's permission to enter, so when he
told him he became enraged, and moved the family back to Castiglione,
thinking that his mind would change. But Aloysius' resolve remained
firm, and his father eventually gave Aloysius permission to enter the
novitiate in 1585. He professed his vows in 1587 and did philosophy
study at the Roman College. During his theological studies, he worked
with people who were suffering from the plague. He himself was
eventually infected, and he died on June 21, 1591 at the age of

Pope Benedict XIII canonized both Aloysius Gonzaga and Stanislaus Kostka
on December 31, 1726.
