In celebration of the coming Chinese New Year, which falls on 22 January
2004, the Chinese Studies Program is happy to present the following
cultural and intellectual events:

A.  Exhibit of "Selected Chinese Prints of the 20th Century"
    14 January-6 February 2004
    Pardo de Tavera Room, Rizal Library

    This exhibit will showcase numerous pieces of China's print artworks
    selected from thousands produced in the last century. The variety of
    techniques used includes woodblock, lithography, copper plate,
    silkscreen, and gypsography.

B.  Screening of  "Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress"
    23 January 2004 (Friday)
    4:30 p.m.
    Social Sciences AVR

    The film was nominated for the 2002 Best Foreign Film, Golden Globe
    Awards and was the official selection at Cannes, Edinburgh, and Palm
    Springs Film Festivals. It stars Xun Zhou, Kun Chen and Ye Liu and was
    directed by Dai Sijie, who also wrote the novel upon which the film
    was based.

C.  Lecture on "China's Intellectual Climate: Marxism, Conservatism, 
    or Liberalism" by Fr. Thierry H. Meynard, S.J.
