The Premise of Difference: Race, Culture, Nation and

Cosmopolitan Practice in (Pen)insular Southeast Asia

by Joel Kahn

The contemporary formation of ethnic, religious and/or racial groups that make up the "plural societies" of Southeast Asia is closely tied to political modernization. What are its implications for conflict in the region and for the search for cosmopolitan mechanisms of social and political integration? The lecture explores this question by suggesting that (pen)insular Southeast Asia manifests a type of modern polity and society based on "the premise of difference." The contrast is with nations in Asia (Korea, Japan, Vietnam)-and in parts of Europe-that are based on the opposite premise of sociocultural homogeneity. Also to be explored is the possibility of cosmopolitan practice, both within and outside the framework of modern states (including the United States and Australia) which operate on the premise of difference.

Joel S. Kahn (BA Cornell; MPhil, PhD London School of Economics) holds a Chair in Anthropology and Sociology at La Trobe University in Melbourne. He is currently a visiting Professorial Fellow at the Asia Research Institute, National University of Singapore. He is a Fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia and has previously held Chairs at Monash University and the University of Sussex in the UK.

Professor Kahn has published four monographs and three edited collections, the most recent being Modernity and Exclusion (Sage, 2001). He has written numerous articles and book chapters on development issues in Indonesia and Malaysia and on race, culture, identity and multiculturalism in Asia, Europe and North America.

The inaugural activities will be held at the Escaler Hall, Science Education Complex A, Ateneo de Manila University starting at 4:00 p.m. The lecture of Professor Kahn will commence at about 5:40 p.m. Guests are requested to be seated before 4:30 p.m.
