Report on the Rizal Library Conference on "Library Management in the 21st
Century"
March 29-30
Escaler Hall, Science Education Complex

As part of its outreach program, the Rizal Library held a conference on
March 29-30, 2004 to update Filipino librarians about issues and trends
in the practice of librarianship in the 21st Century. More than two
hundred (200) Library administrators, librarians, information
specialists, library staff, library and information science teachers, and
students from here and abroad attended the conference. In addition, the
Rizal Library sponsored librarians from the Quezon City Public
Libraries,	teacher-librarians from the Pathways to Higher Education
participating institutions, undergraduate students from C.E.U., P.N.U.,
P.U.P., U.E., U.P. Diliman, and U.S.T. to enable them to attend the
conference. The fees collected from the paying participants, the
exhibitors in the mini-book fair and the information suppliers who gave
presentations about their online products were more than enough to cover
the expenses incurred by the library in holding the conference. Fifteen
(15) book vendors participated in the mini-book fair while two online
vendors gave presentations.

Twelve speakers were invited to present papers in the conference, namely,
Y.Bhg. Dato' Dr. Zaiton Osman, University of Malaya, Ms. Sharipa Hanon
Bidin, Open University of Malaysia, Mr. Jaffee Yee, Yankee Book Peddler,
Dr. Shalini R.Urs, University of Mysore, India, Ms. Sharon Henry, Asian
Development Bank Library, Dr. Diljit Singh, University of Malaya, Ms.
Thelma Kim, St. Louis University, Ms. Corazon Nera, Lyceum of the
Philippines and member of the Board for Librarians, Ms. Annabelle
Acedera, Xavier University, Ms. Fe Angela Verzosa, and Ms. Perla Garcia,
De La Salle University, and Ms. Ma. Bernardita M. Reyes, Archdiocesan
Archives of Manila.

The ratings given by the participants for the conference indicate that
the objectives of the conference and the expectations of the participants
were met. The participants also requested that the Rizal Library hold
more conferences for librarians in the future. As stated by Dr. Benilda
Santos in her opening remarks, this is the first librarians' conference
held in the Ateneo de Manila Campus that has been sponsored by the Rizal
Library.

The Rizal Library staff would like to thank the University administration
for the full support given to the Library in holding this activity.
