former Senior Curator, Ateneo Art Gallery

on "The PAG Years & The Beginning
                        of Modern Philippine Art"

In the 1950s and 60s, progressive artists and art collectors found a home in
Lyd Arguilla's "biggest little room," the Philippine Art Gallery. In his first
lecture at the Ateneo de Manila University since his retirement, one of the
country's preeminent art critics recalls one of the most colorful chapters in
Philippine art history as he traces the beginnings of modernism in the country.
Animating his appreciation of the works featured in the Gallery's
ongoing "Refiguring Modern Philippine Art" exhibition with first hand accounts,
this is a rare opportunity to rediscover an era - an unforgettable ArtSpeak
experience not be missed.

Prof. Emmanuel Torres was formerly Curator (1960-2001) and Senior Curator
(2001-2002) of the Ateneo Art Gallery. Apart from several award-winning books
on art, he has published three volumes of his poems.

This is the tenth edition of ArtSpeak, the Ateneo Art Gallery's monthly series
of talks by significant art practitioners. As part of the lecture program for
the "Zero-In: Private Art, Public Lives" consortium project of the Ateneo Art
Gallery, Ayala Museum, and the Lopez Memorial Museum, this event is co-
sponsored by Globe Telecom and the Ateneo Library of Women's Writings (ALIWW).
Admission is free and open to the public. Advanced booking is recommended, as
seats are limited. For more information, please contact Yolly Arambulo at 426-
6001, ext. 4160.

University, Loyola Heights, Quezon City. Museum hours: 8 am to 5 pm, Monday to
