                               LUIS LEÓN LASA
from the Ateneo Art Gallery collection

                       Tuesday 12 March 2002 at 6pm
Print & Drawing Room, Ateneo Art Gallery

****As one of the the highlights of this evening's opening,
a caricaturist will be on hand to sketch guests free of charge****

In the words of renowned Spanish writer Eduardo Chicharro, the late Hispano-
Filipino caricaturist Luis León Lasa (1890-1986) was the only individual
to "raise the personal caricature to the category of Art." As abbreviations of
life, Lasa's satiric line exceeded the tendency to exaggerate physical
features, delving into the very essence of his subjects to arrive at what
Goethe called "the utmost truth."

This exhibition of over fifty acrylics and temperas on paper from the
collection of the country's first museum of modern art, the Ateneo Art Gallery,
reintroduces the life and art of Lasa to the Filipino public.

"Luis Leon Lasa: Caricatures from the Ateneo Art Gallery collection" features
some of the artist's best works from the prime of his career (the 40s and 50s):
personalities from Spain's social, political and literary set, as well as a
dazzling gallery of theatrical divas and Hollywood personalities. An elegant
catalogue, with essays written by Instituto Cervantes Director Javier Galván
and Ateneo Art Gallery Senior Curator Prof. Emmanuel Torres and full-color
plates reproducing key works from the collection, accompanies the show.
The Ateneo Art Gallery is at the Ground Floor, Rizal Library, Ateneo de Manila
University. For more details pls contact Yolly at 426-6488 or local 4160.
