The Environmental Science for Social Change, Inc. (ESSC)  is a non-stock, non-profit research institution that offers a career for qualified candidates for the following positions:

HYDROLOGY ASSOCIATE (ESSC-Bohol)
The job entails undertaking hydrological research and analysis in relation to the environment and natural resource management. He/she reports directly to the Senior Hydrologist and the Visayas Project Manager and coordinates with other research team.

The Hydrology Associate shall be responsible for implementing hydrological research activities, setting up and maintaining field hydrological apparatus, data-gathering and data analysis. The work requires the Hydrology Associate to spend at least 60% of the time in the field.

Qualification Requirements
1.                  Candidates must have at least a bachelor's degree, preferably in physical science and mathematics.

2.                  Knowledge of scientific and analytical methods and prior field experience of at least two (2) years.  

DIALOGUE COORDINATOR (ESSC-Bohol)

The qualified applicant is responsible in facilitating and documenting dialogues between NGOs, LGUs, communities and other research participatory groups.

1.   Arranges the pre-dialogue preparations that include the following:  venue, food budget for the entire activity, and the program of activities during the dialogue, the materials that will be needed during the dialogue proper.

2.   Conducts community consultations prior to the dialogue proper to surface issues and concerns of the people in the community (Note:  this community consultation will only proceed when the necessary protocols have been observed like courtesy call to the local government officials and the consent of the community members have been given.)

3.   The dialogue proper: facilitates the dialogue proper, conceives the ice breakers (what and when), and gives a synthesis of the major highlights and issues raised at the end of the dialogue.

4.      Post Dialogue activities: writes a narrative report of the dialogue conducted, writes assessment and identifies best practices, challenges and lessons learned during the dialogue.

Qualification Requirements:

·         Development work experience or related socio-cultural or environmental background.

·         Fluent in written and spoken English and Tagalog, and/or Cebuano.

·         The ability to work under pressure, long hours, and in situations of stress and uncertainty, and perhaps in conditions of insecurity and conflict.

·          Willing and able to travel frequently for extended periods and to remote areas.

·         Understanding of current issues in environment, culture, and development.

·         Have tact, diplomacy, and flexibility to deal with a wide range of people.

·         Possess creative and analytical thinking, technical writing, and oral communication skills.

·         Computer literacy in MS Word and Excel at the minimum.

 

 MAPPING ASSISTANT (ESSC-Bohol)

The qualified applicant will engage in fieldwork activities for data collection/gathering. He/She will undertake community researches, writing, digitizing, and use of fieldwork equipment such as GPS, compass, etc.  Likewise, he/she will contribute in the development of ESSC database.  

Qualification Requirements:

·         Candidates must have at least a bachelor's degree or 2-3 years relevant experience.

·         Must possess the following abilities: 

(a)        perseverance, willingness to work overtime when necessary and dedication to finish assigned tasks;

(b)         creative and analytical thinking, technical writing, and oral communication;

(c)         inter-agency coordination skills;

(d)        knowledge in Autocad 14, GIS software, MS Word, Excel, and other related application programs;

(e)         capability to work with minimum supervision; and

(f)           flexibility and willingness to perform other related activities/tasks as may be assigned by the direct Supervisor or the Director.

 LUZON PROGRAM MANAGER

The qualified applicant will report directly to the Director and coordinates with the Visayas Project and the National and Mindanao Program Managers in ensuring work coherence and connectivity. He/She will also contribute significantly in further developing the current institutional management strategies and programs and lead the Luzon program development towards new areas of work. 

Qualification Requirements:

·         Development work experience or related socio-cultural or environmental background.

·         Proven management experience, demonstrating competencies in budgeting, program, and personnel management.

·          Proven skills in assessment, planning, and implementation.

·         Strong analytical and conceptual skills, in particular an ability to rapidly assimilate, analyze and report on complex information.

·          Fluent in written and spoken English and Tagalog, and/or Ilokano.

·         Good interpersonal skills and the ability to relate and work sensitively with people from a variety of cultural and social backgrounds.

·          Ability to manage multiple priorities and work with deadlines.

·          Ability to work on own initiative to build on and develop the job, combined with the ability to work as part of a team.

·          Willing and able to travel frequently for extended periods and to remote areas.

·          Understanding of current issues in environment, culture, and development.

·          Computer literacy in MS Word and Excel at the minimum.

·          The tact, diplomacy, and flexibility to deal with a wide range of people.

·          The ability to work under pressure, long hours, and in situations of stress and uncertainty, and perhaps in conditions of insecurity and conflict.

PROPOSAL DEVELOPMENT SPECIALIST
The qualified applicant will report to the Planning & Publications Manager.  He/she will develop and implement an institutional proposal development strategy within the framework of broader institutional programs.

Qualification Requirements

1.                 Candidates must have a College degree preferably Mass Comm./Journalism major

2.                  Excellent writing and analytical skills

3.                  Ability to develop institutional rationalization

4.                  Can provide levels of primary technical inputs

5.                  Can integrate levels of social relevance

 Duties and Responsibilities

 1.                  To identify and understand institutional programs

 2.                  To identify institutional work elements that need further enhancement                       that  will be the basis for project development

 3.                  To link with key staff that can provide inputs (social, technical, financial,                   etc.)

 4.                  To facilitate institutional discussions (group discussions, one-on-one                       interviews, etc.)

5.                  To explore external resource inputs, if not available institutionally, and                      facilitate discussions

6.                  To assist in identifying potential funding agencies and reviewing                                  specific requirements

7.                  To identify key elements of proposals and develop initial outlines

8.                  To conceptualize and draft proposals within the framework of potential                      funding agency while maintaining institutional integrity 

9.                  To follow-through on subsequent activities needed after submission.

Administrative responsibilities include maintaining a coherent filing and communication system and ensuring that contracts and agreements are disseminated and sufficiently explained to the responsible managers.

PUBLICATION SPECIALIST

The qualified applicant will report to the Planning & Publications Manager to develop an institutional publications strategy that will capture the substance and the value of the work being done and comprehensively present to Philippine society and other interested audiences.

Qualification Requirements

    1.   Candidates must have a College degree preferably Mass Comm./Journalism           major

Duties and Responsibilities
1.                  Writing:  He/she will design and draft institutional publications (such as books, poster maps, brochures, annual reports, briefing notes, speeches, newsletters, etc.) in the appropriate medium as may be necessary (such as Power Point, Overhead Projection, etc.)

2.                  Editorial:  He/she will ensure the quality of the written work and its accompanying documents (such as maps, photos, etc.)

3.                  Creative Lay-out:  He/she will ensure the creative and appropriate lay-out of the publications.

4.                  Publishing and Printing:  He/she will coordinate and facilitate the discussions with the printers, publishers, color separators, and other personage

5.                  Launching and Marketing:  He/she ill design and implement the appropriate launching activities and marketing strategy so that the publications are disseminated and presented to its target market and audience.

Executive Assistant

The qualified applicant will work directly with the Director. He/She has over all responsibility for assisting the Director in carrying out day-to-day activities and tasks including coordinating interaction with various groups and individuals.  Also, he/she is tasked with the following activities: (1) management of correspondence; (2) filing; (3) keeping and updating of directory, mailing list, range of communications (phone call, fax, e-mail); (4) scheduling of appointments and meetings; (5) responsible for funds and travel; (6) upkeep of vehicle and other equipment; and (6) other related activities/tasks as may be assigned by the Director.

Qualification Requirements:

·          College degree holder or 3-5 years relevant experience.

·          Must possess the following abilities:

(a)   creative thinking, technical writing, documentation, and oral communication;

(b)   knowledge in MS Word, Excel, and other related application programs;

(c)   willingness to work overtime when necessary;

(d)   inter-agency coordination skills;

(e)   flexibility; and

(f)     capability to work with minimum supervision.

Candidates must have a genuine interest in social and environmental issues and must be willing to work on overtime and travel to research field sites. He/She must be ready to work under pressure in the context of a growing and dynamic institution.
