The Ateneo Art Gallery, together with the Australian Embassy in Manila,
warmly invite you to a stimulating afternoon of ArtSpeak with
Filipino-Australian artist Maria Cruz over Starbucks Coffee on Wednesday, 9
January 2002, 4:30 P.M. at the Print & Drawing Room.
MARIA CRUZ TELLS US WHAT WE WANT TO KNOW
ArtSpeak, the Ateneo Art Gallery's continuing series of talks by significant
artists, welcomes the New Year with Filipina-Australian painter Maria Cruz.
This is a rare opportunity to meet the expatriate artist, whose works have
been acclaimed by critics in some of the more progressive international art
journals. The event is co-sponsored by Starbucks Coffee and the Australian
Embassy in Manila, and is scheduled on Wednesday, 9 January, 4:30 p.m. at
the university art museum's Print & Drawing Room.
Ms. Cruz studied painting in Manila, Sydney, and at the Kunstakademie in
Dusseldorf under Klaus Rinke. In recent years, her work has appeared at the
Art Gallery of New South Wales, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney, and
at the Asia-Australia Arts Centre where she was included in an exhibition
organized by Ateneo Art Gallery curator Ramon E.S. Lerma. She has also been
the recipient of the Hobart Art Award, and the prestigious Portia Geach
Memorial Award, the most important prize for portraiture given to an
Australian woman artist. Last September, she completed a residency at PS1
New York, and currently lectures in painting at the University of Western
Color theory combinations, figuration, text and abstraction are fused in Ms.
Cruz's paintings. The artist will be discussing these in light of her
ongoing projects, and will touch on the enigmatic oil on canvas she gifted
to the Gallery in 1994, Tell Me What You Want To Know (1990).
Admission to ArtSpeak is free and open to the public. Advanced booking is
