               The Department of Interdisciplinary Studies
invites you to a lecture series

                  POPULAR PERCEPTIONS AND THE PRESIDENCY
                     Dr. Soledad S. Reyes, Coordinator

This interdisciplinary lecture series takes into account the
problematic relationship between popular perception and the specific
ways in which it has interacted with and/or shaped the institution of
the presidency. This issue is especially of relevance today because
it constitutes a basic element of the Estrada presidency and the
complex issues it has spawned, the effects of which continue to
mystify social scientists and erstwhile pundits.

Although the focus is on the Estrada presidency, other presidents
who captured the people's imagination for various reasons will also be
included. Thus, papers will be focused on Ramon Magsaysay (1953-57),
Ferdinand Marcos (1967-86), Corazon Aquino (1986-1992) and would-be-
presidents Rogelio de la Rosa (1950s) and Senator Benigno Aquino
(1970s). The series proposes to examine the diverse ways in which the
different leaders have been constructed through various means (through
CIA propaganda in the case of Magsaysay, the sytematic use of history
and myth in the case of Marcos, the rituals of the pasyon and death in
the case of Benigno Aquino and Cory Aquino, the deployment of language
in the case of Estrada, etc.).
