We received the announcement of The Sumitomo Foundation on research grants
and would like to forward it to the Ateneo faculty.


1. Grant for Japan-Related Research Projects

	Research projects carried out by East and Southeast Asian
	researchers (individuals or groups) in social sciences or the
	humanities which are related to Japan.

	Total Budget:  Approx. 40 million yen
	Application Period: August 1-October 31, 2001


2.  Grant for Projects for the Protection, Preservation and Restoration of
    Cultural Properties outside Japan

	(1) Projects for the protection, preservation and restoration of
	    cultural properties (fine art objects or historical monuments)
	    outside Japan which are tangible, old and artistically or
	    academically valuable and ought to be handed down to future
	    generations.

	(2) Preliminary surveys immediately linked up with the projects in
            (1) above.

	Total Budget:  Approx. 20 million yen
	Application Period: October 1-November 30, 2001


3.  Grant for Projects for the Protection, Preservation and Restoration of
    Cultural Properties in Japan

	Projects for the protection, preservation and restoration of
	cultural properties (fine art objects) in Japan which are
	tangible, old and artistically or academically valuable and ought
	to be handed down to future generations.

	Total Budget: Approx. 50 million yen
	Applicaiton Period: October 1-November 30, 2001


The application period for the next two has lapsed. They are:


4.  Grant for Environmental Research Projects

	Research projects relating to the environment in natural sciences,
	social sciences or the humanities or in interdisciplinary fields.

	Total Budget: Approx. 105 million yen
	Application Period: April 15-June 30, 2001


5. Grant for Basic Science Research Projects

	Pioneering basic research projects carried out by young
	researchers (individuals or groups) in mathematics, physics,
	chemistry or biology (including fundamental engineering) or in
	interdisciplinary fields.

	Total Budget: Approx. 135 million yen
	Application Period: April 15-June 30, 2001
